Studding was all done and it was time for putting up the insulation and vapor barrier. There are a lot of different city building codes around this, so I needed to confirm with the inspector before doing anything. Even though my engineers plans outlined specific R values, the inspector has already caught things the city planners missed after approving my plans. Due to all the new insulation I was putting into the basement and first floor and the changing of the room locations in the basement, the old furnace, which was really only 5 years old, was too powerful for the house. So new HVAC plans, new duct work and a new furnace was necessary.

The old bathroom on the main floor had a 6 inch thick cement base below the old tile – no way that was going to crack. I didn’t want to apply another layer of tile on top and since I was making the bathroom a foot larger, it was important to me that the floor was level. Here goes another demolition…

Now that the old wood floors and multiple layers of tile in the kitchen have been removed, I’m putting in a new subfloor.

The last part to the main floor demolition was to remove the old hard wood floor and tile in the kitchen. Parts of the old hard wood were water damaged from the leaking roof and the tile in the kitchen was hideous. They needed to be removed.

I was thinking about leaving the upstairs until the basement was done, but friends are telling me to do it all at the same time. While I have the house clear of furniture, garbage bin, and have helpers, I might as well do what ever demolition and construction work on the upstairs – my friends recommended. So I took the advice and started the demolition of the upstairs. Walls, ceiling, everything…oh my
